It’s been a quite long time since I saw a movie and really enjoyed it. Well, this might not be strictly a movie, rather a cinematic documentary with a big cast. Anyway, it is all about the 2008 mortgage financial crisis and how some people had foreseen it. In other words, “What if you are right and they are wrong?”. This was the crux of the movie and seeing that coming out from a mainstream movie was more that refreshing. Even Greece was mentioned! Extra credit to Steve Carell in his excellent semi-serious role.
I have read about this story for the first time in the book “Global Minotaur” by Y. Varoufakis. The bad news as pointed out is that this whole situation is not over. We are 8 years ahead but since there was never actually a clear solution given to the problem, the elements of the crisis emerge again. Quoting a famous segment from Thucydides “Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must“, it is obvious who did and is unfortunately going to pay for it.
Highly recommend The Big Short (2015).
